"Designed for Families" - Google Play's New Program

"Designed for Families" - Google Play's New Program

Latest Google news is regarding the announcement search engine giant made yesterday regarding another developer program it has introduced with the name “Designed for Families.” This program will let the app publishers to choose an additional evaluation in order for them to have their apps labelled as “family-friendly.” This new designation is all set to make a presence on Google Play. However the company has not revealed the way how these group of specific apps will become discoverable once they have been put there.
According to Google news, the number of developers that come under the specifics of this group being featured by Google are Kids, Crayola, Tinker and PBS. These developers are famous for offering content which is age appropriate, high quality, and also the UI and features that make the young kids learn new thing and also are a source of entertainment for them.
However the “better” apps also include the ones that are not essentially of the same calibre. This will create problems for parents if they find it out that such apps are being used for their kids to use and play with.
In order for the app to qualify to come under the “Designed for Families” category, it will have to meet a “stringent legal and policy bar”. It will further be headed towards a specialized review of its operations and features.
It is said that there could be a longer process involved as compared to merely a standard review. Developers can choose the option via Google Play Developer Console. From there, the search engine giant will review the developer’s submission in order to confirm that it meets the new guidelines and also the existing one.
The policy guidelines and eligibility criteria are the in-house development of the company but have been developed considering the best practises going on in the market as far as the data collection and ad targeting is concerned.
This move by Google seems quite similar to what Apple had introduced as “Kids” section in the App Store. This helps excluding the entire section from the larger pool and making it more prominent so it can be reached out to the suitable users efficiently. The “Kids” section in App Store features the selected apps that have been filtered out based on the content and also on their meetings of the guidelines and policies made by Apple. Behavioural advertisement has been excluded from this factor which generates ads on the bases of the in-app activity. There have been no plans of including the advertisement based on interest or remarketing factor in to this section.
